Whitney Bank, or officially known as Whitney National Bank, is a regional community bank headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana. The bank was founded in 1883, and it is among the oldest continuosly operating banks in the State of Louisiana. Whitney Bank is a significant player in the Gulf South banking industry. The branches of the bank are distinguished by a characteristic clock, usually known as the “Whitney clock.” Whitney National Bank also became the official bank of New Orleans Saints, starting with the 2010 NFL season.
On December 21, 2010, Whitney Holding Corporation agreed to merge with Hancock Holding Company, a financial services company based in Gulfport, Mississippi. The merger took place in the second quarter of 2011, and with that, Whitney National Bank’s charter was dissolved. Hancock Bank of Alabama became a part of the Hancock Bank charter, and Hancock Bank of Louisiana was renamed and re-chartered as Whitney Bank. As of December 2013, Whitney Bank has more than 180 domestic branches operating in Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, and Florida.
Through a series of transactions and mergers, Hancock Holding Company was established as a prominent Gulf South financial services company backed by two strong FDIC insured banks; Whitney Bank and Hancock Bank. Hancock Bank was the only subsidiary of Hancock Holding Company before its merger with Whitney Bank. It was founded in 1899 and is frequently rated as one of the nation’s most trustworthy banks.
Whitney Bank still follows the sensible business practices and fundamental principles set forth by its original founders.
